Sesamoid Points    (2 of them), are located just below each sesamoid and between the sesamoid bone and the head of the first phalanx on the postero-medial and postero-lateral aspects of the fetlocks respectively.


Insertion to 10mm.

The front sesamoids are the most commonly injured.


Note the triangular shape when viewed from behind.


The lateral sesamoid point is located just postero-lateral to the lower triangular point of the lateral sesamoid bone.


The medial sesamoid point is located just postero-medial to the lower triangular point of the medial sesamoid bone.

It is common practice to encircle the affected sesamoid, in this case the left sesamoid of the left front leg, with a ring of points as shown. Often both sesamoids of the same leg are treated at the same time.
